The More-than-Human Smart Decision-Making in Water Policy project is an interdisciplinary research collaboration between academic researchers, policymakers, citizen groups and creative practitioners. It is exploring how we can move beyond a human-centred perspective of urban rivers to consider the ways in which humans and non-humans such as plants, animals, algae, and sensors are interrelated and interdependent.

This animation is a prototype artwork exploring more-than-human data to raise new perspectives on water ecologies. It has been designed to explore potential ways in which we can collect, analyse and display data from a range of non-human actors each who have a different sensory perception of the environment they live in. What data would blue-green algae or otters collect if they could do so? And how would they collect it - what new sensors would be devised by mayflies? What metrics would appeal most to a carp?
Use the tabs that appear at the top of the screen to play with different scenes, add items to the composition or switch layers of information on and off.
This animated work has been created by Julie Freeman at Translating Nature, with Stephen Wolff.
Project lead: Sara Heitlinger (City, University of London). Project team: Ruth Catlow (Furtherfield), Lara Houston (Anglia Ruskin University), Izzy Bishop (University College London), Victoria Robinson & Philip Tovey (Defra), Hydar Dewachi, Naho Matsuda
The project was co-created with partners Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and builds on creative methods developed in collaboration with arts organisations Furtherfield and Translating Nature.
